History Rising (Sadler's Wells Global Dance Contest)

A modern dance piece choreographed by Max Hershenow. My entry in the Sadler's Wells Global Dance Contest. From the program notes: 1. Pre-1956, Fishermen's Duet 2. Post-1956 Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates, has become known in the past twenty years for its astonishing high-speed growth, fantastical architecture, and gratuitous displays of wealth. Under a single ruling family, these developments have transformed what was once a sleepy fishing village into a globalized metropolis with an international reputation. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Dubais story is the rate at which the city has grown. In 1956, the first concrete block buildings were built in the city; prior to that date, all buildings were impermanent palm frond structures. Fifty years later, the city is home to the tallest buildings in the world, underwater hotels, manmade islands, and indoor ski resorts. However, an overemphasis on short-term economic prosperity has led to human rights abuses and questions of environmental and economic sustainability. This conflict is explored in this piece.
