New attending for Old Town Orcutt

A local group is working to beautify the community of Orcutt. The newest additions include a town clock on Clark Street, as well as new benches, trees, and shrubs all around town, but there are those who say the changes could disrupt the town's western charm. This 17-foot tall clock stands as a local landmark for downtown Orcutt. It's the latest effort to bring a new look to an old town. "In every old town, there used to be an old clock and that was missing here," said Berto Van Veen with the Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association. Those who helped pay for the $22000 timepiece were given drawings of old Maud, an oil well that used to be a fixture in the community. Three more projects are in the works for downtown Orcutt. One of them is this intersection at Clark and Gray, where markings have already been drawn for more trees and stamped concrete. More fundraisining is also underway for a flag pole to honor veterans. At the center of all this change is the Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association or OTORA The group formed seven years ago. "We could not build any nice buildings here in town or big enough that we could develop because the lots are so small," Van Veen said. So, they worked with the county to change the zoning restrictions. Since then, they have built seven new structures and added benches and trees.
