Entry from: Georgetown, Malaysia Entry Title: "Penang" Entry: "We were staying in the historic Georgetown part of Penang Island quite close to the ferry terminal at a great little hotel. While the town was not quite as charming as the guidebooks had suggested, there were still plenty of old, two-story Chinese shop-houses and wonderful colonial-era buildings mixed in with ugly modern, concrete structures. We wandered the streets in search of some of the famous Penang food. The town seemed very quiet, we went looking for a famous Georgetown street market for dinner but when we found the street all we could see were closed shopfronts and a few banners advertising the market. It was hot and humid so we stopped for a beer at a little bar run by a colourful character and we spent some time watching the world go by. As the daylight started to fade, we walked past the Masjid Kapitan Kling mosque (built by Indian settlers), which was beautifully lit, and stumbled into Little India. While the area was small, just a block in each direction, from an intersection, it was vibrant. The streets were packed with people (mainly Indian), cheerful Bollywood music blared out of several CD shops, and there were clothes shops, restaurants and street stalls.
