BIM Awards US 2010 - Nathan Wood, Sutter Medical Center

Sutter Medical Center Castro Valley (SMCCV) is an innovative 130 bed replacement hospital currently under construction. Completion is scheduled for in June of 2012. The estimated maximum price set for this project is $320 Million. The seven story building is a composite steel and concrete framed structure. The structural design of this building is considerably more complex due to the new seismic requirements set forth in California's legislation. This fast track project is scheduled to be delivered 30% faster than comparable healthcare projects in California. This schedule would not be possible without the use of BIM technologies and the innovative 11-party lntegrated Project Delivery (IPD) team. This team has been working together since 2008 to build a completely coordinated and constructible model that will eventually get passed onto the owner for facilities management use. Additional Companies: Air System, Inc.; C/S Erectors, Inc; Capital Engineering Consulting; Clark Pacific; Devenney Group Ltd.; Ghafari Associates, LLC; Gregory P. Luth and Associates; Harris Salinas Rebar Inc.; JW McClenahan Co.; Morrow- Meadows Corporation; Royal Glass Company, Inc.; Strategic Project Solutions; Superior Air Handling; The Herrick Corporation; Tmad Tayor & Gaines; Transbay Fire Protection, Inc.; The Engineering Enterprise; Sutter Health

World Trade Center 7 "collapse" montage - Email friendly

This brief compilation of video clips showing the "collapse" of World Trade Center Building 7 the evening of September 11, 2001 is small enough to be sent as an email attachment. WTC 7 was a 47 story concrete reinforced steel high rise, NOT hit by an airplane. It was the 3d building to come down on 9/11. It had relatively small fires on several floors that burned for only a few hours. The buildings around it (closer to the twin towers) sustained much greater damage from debris and fires, yet none of them "collapsed". NEVER before in the history of architecture has a concrete reinforced steel high rise come down due to fire, yet the official government report on Building 7 states this is what occurred. The destruction of Building 7 had all the characteristics of a controlled demolition. The final government report on this building admits that FREE FALL speed did occur, yet the only way free fall (at the acceleration of gravity) can occur is if there is NOTHING BUT AIR under the collapsing structure. The only way to get all the underlying support out of the way at once, so the building falls symmetrically, (maintaining a level roof line all the way down) is with explosives removing all supporting structures low in the building. Over 1200 state licensed architects and engineers have investigated what happened to Building 7, and have called for a new independent investigation that examines whether explosives were used. (The official government report admits their ...

David Brower Center PT shear walls

The David Brower Center / Oxford Plaza housing is an integrated model of sustainable design. The mixed-use urban project includes office space for non-entry of non-profit organizations' work beneficial to the environment, a conference center, restaurant, affordable housing, commercial areas, parking lots and sub-grade. David Brower The central part of the project was designed to achieve a LEED Platinum rating from U.S. Green Building Council. The building features natural ventilation, sophisticatednatural day-lighting strategies, photovoltaic panels and rainwater. System side of the building embodies the philosophy of rollover Tues sustainable integration of design and engineering of high performance seismic. The system used to create prestressing cable ductile shear walls and moment frames for damage resistant structure and characteristics of force recovery. The use of slag, a byproduct of the industry, will reduce the embedded energy "and" carbon footprint "of the buildingthe order of forty percent. This is the first Bay Area project, the use of high slag cement on such a large scale. Both the high slag cement and reorient the structure have been proposed for LEED innovation credits.
