Astani Dept Seminar: Scaling of Fracture in Quasibrittle Structures

March 8, 2011 Qiang Yu Northwestern University Abstract: Quasibrittle Materials, which include concrete, fiber composites, tough ceramics, bone and many other engineering materials, are widely used in the fields of civil engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering and bio-engineering. A salient feature of quasibrittle material is that its constituents are brittle and, due to heterogeneity, its fracture process zone is not negligible compared with the structure size. The consequence is that the structure strength (nominal stress at failure) is size dependent. Statistical studies showed that if size effect is ignored in concrete design, the failure probability may increase by orders of magnitude, eg, from 10-6 to 10-3. Therefore, the proper scaling of quasibrittle structure strength is of great importance for structural safety and reliability.In this study, the scaling of fracture in shear of RC beams, at reentrant corners, and in metal-composite hybrid joints is investigated theoretically, experimentally, and numerically.

Follow us on Facebook : www.facebook.com Pro-people budget not possible in the present elitist structure: PAT's pre-budget seminar Distinguished speakers at a pre-budget seminar organized by Pakistan Awami Tehreek have demanded of the government to establish Budget Regulatory Authority, increase budgetary allocations for health, education and jobs creation, bring the wealthy class into the tax net, and take concrete actions to rid the country of the programmes with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They agreed to the need of cutting down on non-development expenditure and bringing about comprehensive reforms in the tax regime of the country, dubbing it highly repressive, rigourous and iniquitous. The speakers said that political forces across divide stand for pro-elitist economic and political structures, which benefit them in the short and long terms. They asked the people to stand up against the exploitative system and vote their true representatives from among themselves into power so that they could reflect their aspirations in the budget-making processes. They held that the time was up for the corrupt ruling elite as people were increasingly becoming aware of their rights and it is a just a matter of time before they became master of their own destiny.
